Description
Garessio town museum was founded in 1970 in order to display a range of archeological finds both from the surrounding lands and from very distant places.
In 2003 the expositive space was reorganised and the contents, that the museum wants to divulge, were renovated. The archeological section has been dedicated to production cycles in prehistoric and historical period.
The manufactures of stone, backed clay, glass and iron explain the techniques of manufacture used from Prehistory to the end of Ancient Age and their diffusion in different cultures.
First of all the tour includes ad analysis of manufacture techniques of litihic utensils (roughing out, splintering, retouch and smoothing), with a lot of examples of their use during Paleolithic and Neolithic period. During all the Ancient Age the manufacture of backed clay products were a very important form of handicraft, tried out by the early agricultural societies in order to preserve and carry foods.
The mainly fragmentary body of displayed finds testifies to the production that range from the early Neolitic pieces to the elaborate roman crockery, depending on technical abilities, functional needs (pieces of pottery for cooking, eating and carrying) and cultural influences (engraved, painted, impressed decoration).
Finally some finds allow to refer to more advanced technologies, indispendable for iron and glass working.
The pieces found in Garessio outskirts during the three excavations of Gray and by mere chances from precious clues for the reconstructions of Valle Tanaro history.
